What is an MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a technique which uses radio frequency signals to acquire its images and is best suited for soft (non-calcified) tissue examinations. The technique uses powerful magnets to excite hydrogen nuclei in water molecules in human tissue, producing a signal which is then converted into a highly-detailed 2D thin “slice” image of the body.
What is an X-ray?
X-ray imaging in its simplest form uses electromagnetic radiation to capture a “shadow” on photographic film and is known as “projection radiography” or “plain film radiography”. Bone and some organs (such as lungs) especially lend themselves to projection radiography. In Computed Radiography the photographic film is replaced by an imaging plate which produces a digital image which can be displayed and stored and transmitted with ease.
What is an ultrasound?
Medical Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves of between 2.0 and 10.0 megahertz that are reflected by tissue to varying degrees to produce a 2D image. While it may provide less anatomical information than techniques such as CT or MRI, it has advantages which make it ideal as a first line test in numerous situations, in particular that it studies the function of moving structures in real-time.

The Pavilion Clinic has acquired the ‘first in the UK’ MRI scanner
Patients are able to experience the benefits of Toshiba Medical System’s new MRI Scanner, the Vantage Atlas 1.5 Tesla system.
The new scanner comes with a host of features that improve the comfort of the patient, as well as enabling the clinician to work faster and more efficiently.
The Vantage Atlas’ 128-element system delivers high-resolution images across the entire body with faster imaging times, allowing quick and accurate diagnosis. The new design features an integrated coil concept that allows clinicians to perform multiple scans without repositioning the patient, resulting in more comfortable scan experiences and decreased imaging times. Also available, is a 205-cm acquisition range that allows for feet-first imaging for the entire body, up to the thoracic spine.
Two of the most significant causes of MRI patient discomfort are noise and enclosure in the tunnel. The ultra-short, ultra-wide bore, in addition to providing easier access for obese patients, eases claustrophobia and Toshiba’s patented Pianissimo technology eliminates up to 90% of acoustic noise, dramatically reducing patient anxiety. There is also adjustable lighting and ventilation throughout the bore. The patient couch lowers to 42 cm from the floor, again, providing easier access for less ambulatory patients.
Featuring some of the most advanced MRI applications available, unique scans eliminate the requirement for administering contrast agents.
